Questions & Answers

Is PPF film on the TREK CHECKMATE SLR really necessary? Or does a gravel frame not need any protection?

The carbon frame needs protection every day — not just in crashes. Gravel riding is the toughest test for frame paint: gravel thrown by tyres at speed, rocks and branches on forest roads, and abrasion from mud and sand attack the frame on every ride. STEK PPF covers the entire frame like an invisible skin — without changing the look or geometry.

How long does PPF film last on the carbon frame of the TREK CHECKMATE SLR — even with demanding gravel use?

Our STEK PPF carries a 10-year manufacturer's guarantee against yellowing and cracking. The self-healing top layer eliminates minor scratches with heat, the nanocoating repels mud and water after every ride. Result: the frame stays looking like new — season after season, even on the roughest terrain.

Will removing the PPF film damage the carbon frame of the TREK CHECKMATE SLR?

No. STEK PPF uses a pressure-sensitive adhesive that is completely safe for carbon frames. Remove slowly with gentle heat from a hair dryer — no residue, no damage to paint or carbon. There is no risk of delamination or paint lifting if you follow the correct removal process.

How to apply your TREK CHECKMATE SLR Frame Protection Kit

Instructions

Clean and dry the bike thoroughly, then remove the bottle cage and wheels for better access. Degrease all installation areas with isopropyl alcohol and work in a clean space at 18–25 °C. Lay out and dry-fit each piece to confirm alignment before peeling the backing. Start with the top tube, continue around the head tube, then install the down tube. Apply section by section, smooth toward the edges, avoid overstretching, and leave about a 3 mm gap between separate pieces. Allow 1.5–4 hours for a complete install.
